Friday: The Church and the Nation

For these past seven days we have been praying together as a church. We have prayed for the different types of people that make up God's family and that they would be helped by God to faithfully live out their Christian lives. On this our last day we remember that without God we can do nothing and that with God nothing is impossible. Please keep praying for the church, please keep praying for the nation. A long time ago a group of very wise people gathered and wrote a book called the Shorter Catechism which contained a series of questions on the Christian faith. The first question was: W...

Thursday: The Shouters and the Whisperers

Be honest, are you the kind of person who is loud or are you the proverbial church mouse that people don't notice? In a world where we are bombarded by noise it's important to hear a Christian voice. That can mean being seen as loud or shouting to be heard. Yet God also speaks through the still small voice as described in the Old Testament. If we spend all our time shouting we can miss the whisper of God. Pray today for the shouter, that when society needs to hear a Christian voice they would have the courage to speak up. Pray also for the whisperer who can go unheard and be drowned out, th...

Wednesday: The doers and the Thinkers

People often complain that 20% of the people in any congregation do 80% of the work. Is that fair? Whilst we love people who are practical and who do, we also need people who can think. God has called both doers and thinkers to be part of His family.   If you are a doer remember to pray for the thinkers. They help us to take stock, to reflect on where we are going and to pause before jumping in with both feet. If you are a thinker pray for the doers who help keep the church running and who roll up their sleeves and get stuck in.   God of past, present and future, we seek ...

Tuesday: the Talkers and the Listeners

Our prayers today turn to the talkers and the listeners. The Bible is clear that we should always be ready to explain our faith. Sometimes this will involve words and other times silence. Yet knowing when to speak and when to be quiet is difficult. The right thing to do doesn't actually depend on us but on the person we are with. Do they need us to say the right words or do they need us to listen?   Pray today that we would know when to speak and when to be quiet. If you are a talker pray that God would help you to listen; if you are a listener that God would help you to find the wo...

Monday: the Prophets and the Peacemakers

Our prayers today turn to the prophets and the peacemakers.   It's not easy being a prophet. Usually in the Old Testament they were calling the church back to God after it had moved away. You can guess that this did not make them popular because no one likes being told they are outside God's will. Yet the church needs prophets. It is the prophets who hold us to account and who make sure we are not losing that which makes us distinctive; God.   Alongside them we also need peacemakers. People who sow peace in their wake and who have been gifted by God with wisdom. They help...

Sunday: the Dreamers and Visionaries

Today we are praying for the dreamers and visionaries. A long time ago John Knox dreamed of a church and a school in every parish. He dreamed of a time when even the lowliest person could read and write. Martin Luther King dreamed of a time when the colour of a person’s skin made no difference. Across the congregations of our church there are people who dream of a church that really makes a positive impact, a church that changes lives for the better. One that connects God and people every day. Let us pray for the dreamers. That God would give people the gift to see possibilities where ot...

Saturday: Today we will pray for the decision makers.

From Congregation to General Assembly there are thousands of volunteers who freely give their time and energy to lead God's people. It is no easy thing trying to find what God wants to happen in any given situation and we should remember all those who have to make these decisions. Pray for discernment that they might see God's will, pray for courage to see through what can be hard decisions and pray for wisdom that they might be sensitive in how they exercise their leadership. God of past, present and future, we seek direction for the life of our Church and for ourselves, and remember...

National Day of Prayer – at Granton

Last year the General Assembly (our Governing Body) of the Church of Scotland issued a call for every church to pray. Saturday 25th November was set and materials were produced. Across our nation, tens of thousands of people are praying for the nation and for the church. You are invited to be part of this!  Congregations have approached this in different ways. Some are gathering together and praying together, others are helping people pray individually. Some are doing something special on the 25th, others are choosing a different day that suits them better. In Granton we had planned a pr...
