Granton’s Community Tree lighting event is on the first Sunday in Advent – 29th November at 5pm.

The lighting of the community Christmas Tree in the grounds of the parish church at the start of Advent has become a great annual event where the community gathers together to start celebrating Christmas. There is usually singing, mince pies, fun and a great gathering of people!

Different this year!
However we all know that Christmas is going to be very different this year, and our annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting will be no exception.

The good news is that we will once again be kicking off our Christmas season with a scaled-back event on the First Sunday In Advent – Sunday 29th November – at 5pm.

Be Part Of It
You can be part of your community by joining the event live on Facebook. You can watch as the tree lights are switched on at 5pm, then you can share photos of your own lights – and if it’s too early for your tree why not post a pic of a candle or welcome lights in your window?

Make an event of it and have some mince pies and hot chocolate ready to enjoy in the safety of your own home.

The tree will be up from 29th November right through the season of Advent and Christmas and into the new year, so why not take a few moments over this period to visit and enjoy the tree with the family. Make a bit of quiet time to look back on this very difficult year. The gates will be open and you are welcome to stand by the tree any time – of course following Government guidelines on social distancing!

Together we will remind each other why Granton is such a great place to be and that we can celebrate the start of the Christmas season even in these strange and unfamiliar times.

Ring out those Christmas bells; Ring out those Christmas bells to welcome Jesus.

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,

the little Lord Jesus, laid down his sweet head,

the stars in the bright sky,

looked down where he lay,

the little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay;

The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,

but little Lord Jesus,

no crying he makes,

I love you, Lord Jesus,

look down from the sky,

and stay by my side,

until morning is nigh;

Be near me, Lord Jesus,

I ask you to stay,

close by me for ever,

and love me, I pray,

bless all the dear children,

in your tender care,

and fit us for heaven,

to live with you there.

Come and join the celebration,
It’s a very special day.
Come and share our jubilation:
There’s a new King born today!

See the Shepherds
hurry down to Bethlehem,
Gaze in wonder
at the Son of God who lies before them.

Come and join the celebration,
It’s a very special day.
Come and share our jubilation:
There’s a new King born today!

Wise men journey,
led to worship by a star,
Kneel in homage,
bearing precious gifts
from lands afar.

Come and join the celebration,
It’s a very special day.
Come and share our jubilation:
There’s a new King born today!

“God is with us,”
to the world the message bring.
He is with us!
“Welcome!” all the bells on earth are pealing.

Come and join the celebration,
It’s a very special day.
Come and share our jubilation:
There’s a new King born today!

O Come all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him
Born the King of Angels;

O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

God of God,
Light of Light,
Lo! He abhors not the Virgin’s womb;
Very God,
Begotten, not created;

O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above,
‘Glory to God
In the highest’:

O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

Ding dong! Merrily on high

in heaven the bells are ringing.

Ding dong! Verily the sky

is riven with angels singing:

Gloria, hosanna in excelsis;

gloria, hosanna in excelsis!

E’en so, here below, below,

let steeple bells be swungen:

And i-o, i-o, i-o,

by Priest and people sungen!

Gloria, hosanna in excelsis;

gloria, hosanna in excelsis!

Pray you, dutifully prime

your matin chime, ye ringers;

may you beautifully rime

your eve-time song, ye singers:

Gloria, hosanna in excelsis;

gloria, hosanna in excelsis!
