When Zechariah confirmed that his son’s name was John in accordance with the angel’s command, he was able to speak again. As we saw yesterday, he had broken with tradition – no-one in the family was called John. But Zechariah had learned a lesson in those nine silent months: even a person of lifelong faith still needed to grow and now he praises God. It is all too easy to switch on the cruise control in our Christian lives and to rest on the laurels of past activity. Zechariah reveals that even good people can get better and learn to walk in a deeper trust with God.
