We love the idea that if you follow the rules then things will work out for you. It’s why in Britain we are so obsessed with queueing, and why skipping in line is tantamount to treason. We think life is supposed to reward you for following the rules But life doesn’t work like that. Zachariah and Elizabeth followed all the rules that were expected of them: they were good people, faithful Jews, upstanding members of their society; and yet despite all that they were unable to have children, something very shameful in ancient society. In the end following the rules wasn’t enough. But something else was: trusting in God.
In the end it was their faith in God that brought them a son.
