“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12 v 2
I have a friend with a funny quirk. The longer you talk to him the more he starts to mimic your accent Listen to him on the phone with say an Australian and you’ll hear him slowly, and unintentionally, start sounding more Aussie. Needless to say we give him a good teasing for it.
All of us are impacted by the environment around us. We adapt ourselves to our circumstances, and unfortunately that means we pick up the bad habits of the society around us. If our culture is materialistic we start to be too, if our culture is prejudiced we begin to show those same biases.
Being A Christian means being transformed from the inside out. A relationship with Jesus will transform our minds, meaning the way we think, how we respond and what our priorities are. It will make us more loving, more likely to think of others, quick to forgive, slow to anger, a good friends and a caring neighbour.
The challenge is that as we are transformed, we stop being able to fit so neatly into the world around us. Being a follow of Jesus can make it harder to fit in as it gives us have different priorities and values.
But the good news is we aren’t doing it alone. As Paul says in Chapter 12 “In Christ we form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” We can lean on one another as member of one Christian community all seeking following Jesus.
