The Parable of the lamp under a bowl
You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
In the same way let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Light is something we take for granted. We push a switch at the wall and the light comes on. In the dark months of winter we love to see the lights of Christmas, so January always seems a dark month.
Gradually as spring approaches and days lengthen natural light raises our spirits. Many plants only grow as day length increases a miracle in itself.
Going outside on a clear dark night particularly in the countryside reminds us of the fabulous lights of the stars and can only wonder at their miracle.
Jesus likens our good deeds to the wonders light can perform and we shouldn’t keep these actions a secret but ensure this shows what God is capable of doing through us.
Prayer: Lord help us to always let your light shine through us. Let us see light in the darkness when times are difficult and focus on the good in ourselves and others. Let us always reflect your goodness and light and remember Jesus came into the world as the light of the world and through him we can walk in that light.
Action: Go outside on a clear night and try to count the stars. (Better away from street lights). You might be surprised how many you can see!
