This wonderful prayer walk was a time to step away from the routine of our daily lives; to walk together – or on our own – and explore how God speaks to us through the natural environment and through our own locality and community.

Prayer Walk
Part 1 – Questions for reflection at Granton Gasholder 1 Park
Look up. Take a moment to really look at the sky. How many colours can you see? Look at the cloud shapes; how fast are they moving? How far in the distance can you see? How vast is the sky!
The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
Psalm 19: 1-2 (New International Version UK)
Weather. Notice the weather. Feel the wind or the sun or the rain on your skin. Think about the seasons. Our lives are made up of ‘seasons’. What season of life are you in? Are you content in your season of life?
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV UK)
May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back,
may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon
your fields, and until we meet again may God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
Irish blessing
Walking. Today we are walking. Have we chosen to walk on our own or with others? Do you become more aware of the presence of God in solitude or in community? Or both? How do we live in those truths? Who journeys with you through your daily life?
So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
Romans 12:5 (NIV UK)
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark,
Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a
solitary place, where he prayed.
Mark 1:35 (NIV UK)
New from old. Look at the gas holder structure. Look around you at the park; at what has been created here. Something new has been made from something old. Are there things in your own life that need refreshed? What are the challenges for us as we go through change in the church?
‘Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.
Isaiah 43 18-19 (NIV UK)
Rooted in Community. Take a short walk to the whale sculpture. Quoting the sculptor: “Inspired by one of the Firth of Forth’s most special visitors, the ‘jewel’ of local wildlife, this sculpture takes the form of a life-sized humpback whale partially submerged in the landscape as if emerging from the sea. The piece is designed to highlight the importance of marine life, environmental sustainability and our connection to the natural world.”
The local community were involved in ideas for the shape of the artwork and, in 2026, new textured panels will be added featuring children’s work.
What do you consider as your community? Can you take any inspiration for engaging with our own community at Granton?
10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves.
Romans 12:10 (NIV UK)
Find a resting place. Take the opportunity to find somewhere to sit and look around you. Is this a restful place? Where do you find your rest? What might God be saying to you at this moment, in this place?
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me.
Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest.
Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Prayer Walk
Part 2 – Questions for reflection in Granton Parish Church Gardens
I just had the most unproductive morning.
All I did
was stare out of the window
as a playgroup of house sparrows
picked berries from the pyracantha.
While a blackbird
(whose beak was dirty
through digging through the rich fat
of the soil) simply stood content
on the fence.
I just had the most unproductive morning.
Thank God!
