“Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honour at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.
Matthew 23: 5 – 7
Pharisees did things to make them seem more zealous, more religious than other people. The phylacteries were bits of scroll of paper that had bits of law written on them. They did things for people to think that they were more religious, but as Jesus talks about they allowed pride to rule their actions rather than trying to understand and live out of what the scripture is actually saying. Instead of trying to look good on the outside, our calling is to live out the scripture, even if we might look messy on the outside.
Prayer: Loving God, we give you thanks that you have reminded us that our calling is to live out the scripture, instead of trying to look good on the outside. May we remember that what matters is being authentic instead of trying to look good. May we embrace this instead of trying to run away from it.
Action: Be authentic instead of worrying about how you look on the outside.
