Thought for The Day – Friday 4th June

As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.

Matthew 27: 32

A foreigner was picked to carry the cross. It was normal practice for those who were being crucified to carry their own cross, yet here someone else is brought in to help carry the cross. Simon is not connected to Jesus, and probably didn’t want to be connected to this man who was accused of being a criminal and was on the way to his death. He had no choice in carrying the cross, but had he known who Jesus was, he might have been willing to carry the cross. We might not be asked to literally carry someone’s cross, but we can be looking out for those in our midst who need support, and need someone to help them carry the burden they are carrying.

Prayer: Loving God, thank you for being our rock and support. Help us to be on the lookout for those around us who need support, and someone to walk beside them during difficult times in their lives. You created us to be in community and so may we support people in our communities, so that no one has to go it alone. Amen

Action: Who is someone you can support and help them carry their burden?
