From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.
Matthew 27: 45
For three hours, all the land, not just that area, was covered in darkness. For those of us in Scotland, we are used to darkness coming close to 3 in the winter, but this darkness is different. It covers ALL the land, not just the area where Jesus was on the cross in Golgotha. Darkness is associated with grief, death, difficult times, and it is something that some, if not all of us, try to avoid or escape at points in our lives, because we don’t want to sit in the darkness. While we might try escape darkness in our lives, it is a part of every life, and we have to be willing to walk through the darkness instead of trying to outrun it.
Prayer: Loving God, you gave your Son to us that we might have life abundant. While we have this amazing gift, we also know that we will have to deal with loss and grief in our lives. In those times, remind us that we do not journey through those dark times alone, but you journey with us, and love and comfort us as we grieve. Help us to continue to keep journeying in both good and bad times. Amen
Action: Don’t outrun grief in your life, but allow it to be, and remember that it isn’t the end of the story.
