Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Matthew 26: 39
The Bible indicates that much about the life and death of Jesus Christ was foreordained and known long before it actually happened. Jesus knew this and had been teaching his disciples for some time that God’s plan was for him to be crucified. Yet here, he is asking God the Father to change his plan “if it is possible”.
I have always thought this passage (and many others) is tricky to understand with my layman’s knowledge. With this in mind, I always think that it is one of those things you just have to take on faith – that God knew what he was doing, and Jesus trusted Him. We need to do the same and trust him with our lives.
We know that when our lives are comfortable and safe it is easy to trust you. Remind us that we can also trust you when we are going through times of uncertainty. Help us to grow in that trust, knowing that you want the best for us.
Action: Are we ready to trust God with the plans He has for us?
