When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”
Matthew 26: 8 – 9
The disciples had a point. That perfume was worth thousands in our money. Given as a donation it could have gone a long way. As we’ll see tomorrow this expensive act had a good reason, but not every expense is so justified. As people living in the 21st century we often lead incredibly wasteful lifestyles. We consume things in ways that are unnecessary, which leads to more waste, more pollution, and an increasingly heavy burden on the environment. And it is the poorest in our world who are left to pick up the tab.
The disciples weren’t wrong to ask that question. it’s a question we should ask too. Is this consumption necessary? Will it help the poorest in our world? And is there a way our resources could be put to a better use?
Prayer: Generous God, you have blessed and entrusted me with so many things. Help me to be a good steward of all that you have given. Help me to consume responsibly and know when to make sacrifices for the benefit of others.
Action: As you make decisions today – about what to buy, how to travel, what to eat – keep in mind how it will affect others, especially people in poverty.
