For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.
Isaiah 9: 6 – 7
The beginning part of this passage is a well-known passage made better known by Handel’s Messiah. It can be so easy to focus on the first bit where Isaiah prophesies about a child being born, and the titles which will be given to him. This child will be reigning over David’s kingdom. Yet, his reign will be like none ever experienced before.
Instead of reigning with oppression, and allowing many injustices, he will bring and uphold justice and righteousness. When we look at different kingdoms and governments throughout the ages, we have seen them make promises of peace, justice, and righteousness. Yet, they never live up to all these promises. Here comes this child, and he comes in and is the first leader who leads in a wholly different style. The promises made are kept and he teaches others how to act with peace, justice, and righteousness. Our calling, not only as we celebrate the birth of this child, but throughout our lives, is to practice this same peace, justice, and righteousness Jesus taught us.
Prayer: Gracious God, we give you thanks that you gave us your son, Jesus Christ, to come to this world and bring peace, justice, and righteousness. May we continue to follow in his example. Amen.
Action: What is something you can do to continue practicing the peace, justice, and righteousness Jesus brought into this world?
