Thought for The Day – Saturday 16th January

“But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

Matthew 17: 27

Was Jesus a nice guy? Actually yes he was. Apart from when he lost his temper in the temple we have no record of him shouting or swearing at anyone. Nor is there any record of him putting people down or belittling them. Everywhere Jesus went he conducted himself in such a way that people could see he practiced what he preached. Put another way, his own personality and practice backed up his message.

That is a hard one for us because there are times when our practice and our message are different. Research shows our practice will draw more people to Christ than any amount of preaching. How is your practice of faith going? Are you managing to still keep all your new year resolutions?

Prayer: Heavenly Lord thank you for the example of Christ whose live exemplified his teaching. Sadly so often mine does not. Thank you for being such a forgiving and inspiring God who will always help me to try again and to keep going.

Action: Spend some time thinking about the difference between practice and profession.
