The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”
Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
Matthew 17: 10 – 13
How can something be right in front of your face but you don’t see it? They were expecting an Elijah type figure, they taught about him in their schools so people ‘knew’ exactly what/who to look for, yet they missed it. Same for Jesus. Unless God conformed exactly and in every way to what people were expecting its obvious to us they were never going to notice when he did turn up. Even then, some of them were so comfortable in their own lives they did not want an Elijah figure to upset things.
Do you want God to talk to you? Are you prepared for what he might say or do you want him to confirm only these things you agree with? How open are you to God speaking in ways and through people you might not expect?
Prayer: Heavenly Lord speak to me. May I see you in places I do not expect and hear you when I am not listening. In all places may I recognise it is you when you are there.
Action: Keep your eyes and ears open to God’s voice today.
