Advent Thought for Thursday 24th December

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

Luke 2:  4 – 5

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,

though you are small among the clans of Judah,

out of you will come for me

one who will be ruler over Israel,

whose origins are from of old,

from ancient times.”

Micah 5: 2

I grew up in the same house until I went off to university. I never had to deal with moving to a different house, or even a different city growing up. Yet, here we have this family are having to move back to Joseph’s hometown for the census. Not only are they uprooting themselves, they are moving while Mary is pregnant. There is nothing easy about this. Moving then is not like moving today, as they don’t have a car or a moving van to help them.

Yet, Mary and Joseph know that they are being called to be a part of something pretty big, and so they don’t let the circumstances get in the way. Nothing about what they are going through is easy, but they have pledged to follow what is expected of them from the government, and also what God has asked of them.

Prayer: Loving God, you call each of us to step outside of our comfort zones, to move into places that are unknown and scary. While we might be afraid to step into those unknown places, you remind us that you journey with us. Amen.

Action: Take a step into the unknown.
