In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1: 1 – 5
John starts his Gospel at the very beginning (a very good place to start). He doesn’t open with a genealogy, or with Mary and Joseph, John us right back to the creation of the Universe. It’s hard to start any earlier.
The Christmas Story doesn’t begin with Mary, or John the Baptists or even with the prophets that told his coming. God’s plan to send his son into the world was something planned since before the universe came into being. Christmas was not an accident or a quick fix, it was always God’s intention to come and live among his people so that God’s family could be restored. It’s this incredible cosmic story that we celebrate every year.
Prayer: Everlasting God, your plans are so vast that I can barely comprehend them. Thank you that before everything else you were thinking of us and that you always had a plan to rescue us and bring us into your family.
Act: Take a moment to think about the big picture, and thank God that you have a place in it.
