Thought for the day – #TFTD – Saturday 18th April

matthew post

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Matthew 1 : 24 – 25

Have you ever had a dream that seemed so real that it made you wake up, sometimes in the middle of the night, and jump out of bed to continue whatever you might have been doing in your dream? Sometimes when this has happened to me, I jolt out of bed, ready to go, only to realise what time it was, and that I had dreamed it.

The angel of the Lord has visited Joseph in a dream, and commanded him what to do, and Joseph wakes up, and doesn’t hesitate. He does what the angel of the Lord commanded him. Joseph doesn’t question again what he has been told, he just does it. I think of the tagline for Nike, Just Do It. This is much easier said than done. There are times when we hear the Holy Spirit calling us to do something, and we hesitate, or choose to go a different way from where the Spirit is calling us. May we be willing to follow Joseph’s example, and follow the calling of the Holy Spirit. Who knows the impact it will have on our lives.

Prayer: Gracious God, we give you thanks that you speak to us in many ways and through different people. Help us to hear your calling in our lives, and follow you. Help us to trust in you instead of turning the other way. Thank you for continuing to call us, no matter how we might respond sometimes.

Action: Take time to listen out for God’s voice in your life. When you hear it, don’t push it away. Take time to pray and discern if that is what God is calling you to, and if so, be willing to follow it. The unknown might be scary, but remember that God journeys with us.
