Thought for the day – #TFTD – Sudnay 24th May

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5 : 14 – 16

A week ago, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one to watch (only out of curiosity I hasten to add!) the 2020 lockdown version of the Eurovision Song Contest! Cheesy as ever, there was a brilliant moment at the end of the show when all the entrants movingly sang the UK’s last winning entry in 1997 by Katrina and the Waves, Love Shine a Light. The words of this song reminded me of Jesus’ words at the Sermon on the Mount to the disciples (and to us).

Love shine a light in every corner of the world, let the love carry…Brothers and Sisters in every little part; Let our love shine a light in every corner of our hearts.

In Matthew 5, Jesus is giving his disciples – and us – a huge compliment here in telling us not to hide ‘our light under a bushel’ (King James version) but instead to praise God by being his light in the world by our actions and our deeds (especially during this extraordinary period of lockdown).

Prayer: Thank you Lord Jesus for the compliment of asking us to be – like you – light for the whole world. Help us as we try to live up to this responsibility; looking out for someone in church, a family member, a friend, a neighbour or a work colleague who needs to know that you love them and someone cares for them at this time. In your name I pray, Amen.

Action: Consider a new Act of Random Kindness this week – following social distancing rules of course – as an expression of being like a Light for the Whole World.
