For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6 : 21
Have you ever been asked the question, “if your house was on fire, what one thing would you save?”. It’s a question designed to reveal which of your possession you care most about. Everyone will have a different answer, it could be a photo, a book or some important documents. For me, I would save my Grandfather’s Bible, a family heirloom I could never replace. Whatever we choose, it will be something that we treasure.
Our treasures are the things we value most. That can be material things like our home, our possessions, the money in out bank account. Or they can be immaterial: our family, friendships, our job or our interests and hobbies. They are treasures to us because we care about them.
Jesus said that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Or in other words whatever you consider valuable is what will get your love and attention.
This means that we need to be mindful of our treasures. If your treasure is career success and financial stability then all your focus and attention will inevitably go to your job, meaning other things, like your relationships, can go neglected.
But the good news is that when get our priorities right, when we make loving God and others our treasure, then our hearts will follow.
Prayer: Lord help me to treasure what is most important: loving you, loving my neighbours and living an abundant life. Help me to turn my attention away from distractions and focus on the real treasures of life.
Act: Think about that question of what you would save from your burning house. What does that say about you?
