‘Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Matthew 7 : 13 – 14
Have you ever tried to enter through a door holding a lot of things? You are already walking a bit unsteady because you are carrying so much, and then you try to squeeze all of that and yourself through a door. The reality sets in that there is no way that you will be able to get all that you have along with yourself through the door. You will have to access what you are carrying, and decide what you are willing to keep and what you are willing to let go of, so that you can fit through the door.
In this passage, Jesus is illustrating that the road to life is not one of ease. It would be great if it was easy to get through this narrow gate and be able to stay on the narrow path, but Jesus tells us here that it isn’t easy. In order to make it through the narrow gate, and stay on the narrow road, we need to let go of those things which are not part of what it means to live a faithful life. It won’t be easy during the process, but what waits on the other side of that gate, is something so wonderful, the kingdom of God.
Prayer: Gracious Lord, you call us to walk on this narrow path and follow your teaching and all areas of our lives. Help us to listen to you, and follow your calling at all times, even when we don’t want to because it seems too difficult. Thank you for loving us even when we fall off the path or can’t find the gate. Amen
Action: Look at your life, and look at how you practice living out your faith. Are you taking actions to stay on the narrow path, or are you carrying too much and falling off the path?
