Thought for the Day – 12th July

matthew post

When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.

Matthew 8 : 14 – 15

There are many things in the passage that are not very common. One thing is that Peter was married. He is the only disciple which we find out is married, so this is uncommon. Something else that is not common is that when Jesus touches Peter’s mother-in-law’s hand, she gets up and starts caring for Jesus. I know that when I have had a fever, and recover from it, I don’t jump out of bed and start moving about waiting on people. The recovery process is usually longer.

When we look at Jesus’ ministry, and things he did and taught, there are many things that don’t make sense to people. Jesus did things and said things that people didn’t understand, yet that didn’t stop him. He knew what he was supposed to do, and didn’t allow people’s thoughts or actions stop him from fulfilling his purpose on this earth.

There are so many times when we stop ourselves from doing something because we think it doesn’t make sense, or if people looked at it, they wouldn’t agree with what we did. Remember that Jesus lived a life surprising people and making people uncomfortable.

Prayer: Gracious God, we give you thanks that you surprise us. We give you thanks that you healed and continue to heal people. Help us to take actions, even when we feel uncomfortable, or might do something that doesn’t make sense to other people. You call us to follow you, so help us to do this, even when it might be scary.

Action: Do something that you might make you uncomfortable, and allow life to surprise you.
