Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” Then the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.
Matthew 9 : 5 – 8
When his integrity was questioned, Jesus did not back down or respond angrily. However, he directly confronted his accusers by responding simply, “Why do you doubt me? Isn’t it easier to say ‘You are forgiven’ than to heal a man who is unable to walk? In that case, let me do the more difficult task first so that you may see.”
Jesus then told the man to stand – and the man was healed.
Acting with God’s authority, Jesus showed the teachers of the law that he had not only the power to heal, but also the authority to forgive.
Prayer: God, we know that forgiveness isn’t always a feeling, but a choice that we must make. Just as you chose to forgive our sins, we ask that you help us to forgive those who have hurt us. Help us to swap our anger and resentment for your unending love and grace. Amen.
Action: Look back over the last few days and think about the times that you have felt resentment, anger or bitterness over other people’s actions. Don’t let those feelings dictate the way you live, rather, take control of those feelings by forgiving those who have caused those feelings..
