Thought for the Day – Thursday 20th August

Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.

Matthew 10 : 39

Raised as a good Roman Catholic of his day, Martin Luther the reformer always understood you achieved your way to salvation through your good works. You made penance for your sins and you looked for absolution through the Priest which would effectively set the slate clean. This understanding was the common understanding of his day. Yet as Luther studied scripture he came to the clear understanding that nothing within the power of humanity makes humanity clean. That is entirely within the gift of God.

Therefore you have to stop trying to do it yourself and rather rely on God for salvation. Stop trying to find the right answer on your own and instead find a place to trust in God. To find your life you are going to have accept the power to save it is not yours but God’s. If you think you have found a place where you can do this yourself, guess what?

Prayer: Heavenly Father I really like to be in control. I want to be I charge and I don’t like it when I am not. Asking me to trust in you is difficult because I don’t know what to do. I’m not that good at trusting others with the level of trust you are asking for. Please help me to accept I cannot do this on my own and must rely on you.

Action: Trust in God! Explore in your thoughts and your heart what that means.
