If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
Matthew 10 : 14 – 15
A core tenet of Jewish culture in Biblical times was ‘shalom’ or peace. This involved much more than wishing peace on someone. It involved welcome, neighbourliness, caring for the stranger and peace between that person and God as well as humanity. To deny that welcome to anyone went against the culture. If it happened to you, you would be left in no doubt the people did not like you and you really were not welcome.
Rather than try and convince people who were not interested Jesus encouraged his followers to move on, to go to where the message will be received. Rather than be discouraged and give up, his followers were to keep sharing the message and not give up.
How often when we encounter resistance to the Christian faith do we just give up? Perhaps we should just keep going instead.
Prayer: Lord, there are days when I do not have the strength to fight opposition, when it is easier to pull the covers over my head and pray for tomorrow. Help me to find the strength to put one foot in front of the other and keep going.
Action: Don’t give up!
