“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
Matthew 10 : 21 – 23
Jesus doesn’t do the best job selling the job of being a disciple. He doesn’t hide the hard bits, the times when this calling is difficult. He doesn’t try to paint a pretty picture, instead he lets his disciples then and us now know that being his disciple and spreading the message of the gospel isn’t going to be easy or pain free.
While this calling as a disciple of Christ isn’t easy, it doesn’t mean we can stop. He doesn’t’ say to stop when you are persecuted in one place, instead go somewhere else. Being a disciple doesn’t stop when it gets hard. When we think about times in our lives when things have gotten hard, we can give up, and never continue standing and fighting for things that are important to us, or we push through the difficult times knowing that there is something worth standing and fighting for in this world.
We have the privilege of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with this world. We have received this amazing love and grace from Jesus, so we are called to step forward in boldness. We are called to continue being disciples, because our job will not be done before Jesus returns.
Prayer: Loving God, thank you for your love which calls us forward to be your disciples in this world. Thank you for being that place we can go back to again and again to be reminded of our calling as your disciples. Thank you for loving us even when we mess up and fall short of our calling. Help us to continue to spread the message of this good news to the corners of this world. Amen.
Action: Spread God’s love.
