The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”
He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.
Matthew 13 : 10 – 11
Have you ever been in a situation where someone is explaining something which makes complete sense to you, but other people are struggling to grasp an understanding? There are things which are easier for some people to understand, while for others it goes right over their head. Teachers work hard to make sure that what they are teaching is accessible to all. They want to make sure that all of their students are able understand what they are teaching.
Jesus is doing the same thing in teaching in parables. He wants to make what he is teaching accessible to all, because all people are worthy of hearing what he has to say. He wants to make sure that no one is excluded from being able to understand what he is saying. It is important for Jesus that all people, no matter their background, have access to and can understand his teachings. If he didn’t, then it would not have had the impact that it had on those people then, and on us today.
Prayer: Loving God, we give you thanks that you welcome and include all. You remind us that your kingdom is open to all people, and we should hinder people from having access to you and your love. Help us to live our lives in a way that welcomes people. Amen.
Action: Practise welcoming all through how you speak.
