Thought for the Day – Sunday 4th October

matthew post

In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:

“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;

you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.

For this people’s heart has become calloused;

they hardly hear with their ears,

and they have closed their eyes.

Otherwise they might see with their eyes,

hear with their ears,

understand with their hearts

and turn, and I would heal them.’

Matthew 13 : 14 – 15

I used to walk past the same building every day on my way to Uni, yet it took me 6 months to notice that it had an inscription carved into the stonework. It’s amazing what you can miss when your aren’t paying attention. You can look at with your eyes but not really ‘see’. It makes you wonder, how much more would I be able to see and hear if only I was paying attention?

When we take the time to pay attention it changes the way we view our world. We become more grateful, more aware of the beauty around us and we can even start to see God at work in the world. When we move from a closed mind to an open heart it gives us a whole new perspective on life and allows us to engage with our faith on a whole new level.

Prayer: Lord, it can be so easy to rush through the day and miss so much. Help me to slow down and appreciate the world around me. Open my eyes and hears, help me to see and hear the things I’ve never noticed before, and open my heart to the world and your presence in a new way.

Action: Stop, Look and Listen. For 30 seconds pause what you are doing and ask yourself ‘what can I hear?’ and ‘what can I see?’. Try to repeat this a few times throughout the day.
