While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
Matthew 12 : 46 – 47
Imagine what it would have been like to have Jesus as a son or brother. What would conversation around the dinner table have been like? What was it like having a son and brother who was the messiah? The only story we have of Jesus as a boy is the time he wandered off on his own to teach in the Temple, leaving his mother and father sick with worry. That story points to how hard it must have been to have a family member with such an important mission and destiny. Being Jesus’s family must have been hard.
It can be hard for us when someone we care about has difficult and important work that takes them away from us. Behind many important politicians, missionaries and church leaders are the family members who have to manage their own set of struggles. Jesus’s family reminds us about the people at home: the spouses, children and relatives. They are important to and so we should remember them and honour the sacrifices they make.
Prayer: Loving God, thank you for all the people in my life who love and care for me. I pray that I will never take them for granted and always honour and treasure the love they show me.
Action: Tell someone you care about that you are grateful for them.
